Interview with our Serena Kaur Sandhu, Family Champion of the Year

Serena Kaur Sandhu, Director and Senior Solicitor at Hopkin Murray Beskine was recently interviewed by Family Law Week following her award for Family Law Champion of the Year.

Serena’s career began with a passionate to help people in vulnerable situations, to make legal solutions accessible to those who need them. Going to this extra level, the extra mile is what makes Serena a real champion. Here is what she says:

You won the Family Champion of the Year award – what does it mean to you to have won that award?

I am delighted to have won the Family Champion of the Year award, it was very unexpected, particularly as competition was certainly tough, so it is truly an incredible honour as it is a vote from peers, recognising the work and value I give to the legal profession. I would also like to extend a huge thank you to all my colleagues, opponents and other legal professionals who voted for me and continue to support me on this journey.

Serena Sandhu

You were particularly recognised for supporting the next generation of family lawyers. Can you explain the significance of your passion to do this?

My route to qualification was challenging and self-doubt was an ever present issue. I overcame this by seeing the value of each and every opportunity to undertake legal work, noted and appreciated those who would support a young person in the often hostile, and at times inequitable environment of our profession to young starters. I see myself as having built each stepping stone with quiet painstaking commitment. I was gradually recognised and some colleagues along the way showed great confidence in me, and hence I believe it is important to recognise those struggling to get a foothold on the ladder. This experience has fundamentally shaped my career and I am keen to help those who were once in my position. I strive to be a role model and inspiration to many.
