Increase in domestic abuse during the World Cup: Where to get help and advice
As England prepares for its World Cup semi-final match, football fans across the country are looking forward to supporting them. While this is an exciting time for many, it is also important to recognise that major sporting events can coincide with an increase in incidents of domestic abuse.
As a firm specialising in supporting victims of domestic abuse, we believe it is vital to raise awareness and ensure that individuals and families know where to turn for help if they need it.
The late kick-off times during this World Cup may lead to increased alcohol consumption, which can be associated with a rise in abusive behaviour. However, it is important to remember that alcohol does not cause domestic abuse. Abuse is a choice made by the perpetrator, who is responsible for their behaviour.

Research by Lancaster University found that incidents of domestic abuse increased by 38% when England lost a match and by 26% when England won or drew.
To help tackle this issue, the women’s charity Solace launched its #StopItComingHome campaign, highlighting the need to end violence against women and girls during the World Cup.
Domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence. It can also include emotional abuse, coercive or controlling behaviour, economic abuse, or sexual abuse. No one should ever feel that football excuses abusive behaviour.
If you do not feel safe in your home, or you are concerned for your own safety or the safety of your children, it is important to seek advice and support as soon as possible. You do not have to face domestic abuse alone, and help is available.
